The conversation highlighted on how artificial intelligence is increasingly used across federal healthcare programs to identify risk, improve efficiency, and detect fraud – while also highlighting the governance and transparency challenges that come with those tools. Ashley shared a practitioner’s perspective on what works in the field and where agencies need to be cautious as automation becomes more embedded in program operations. J29 is committed to continuing our support to program integrity initiatives that are immersed in our operations of processing, reviewing, and analyzing claims, records, appeals, and audits – all while leveraging and embedding technology responsible and appropriately into our programs.

During the discussion, Ashley emphasized that while AI can dramatically enhance pattern recognition and anomaly detection, it should not replace human judgment. J29 recognizes that effective oversight requires a balance – combining advanced analytics and technological capabilities with a “human in the loop” with clinical review, policy expertise, and strong operational controls to avoid unintended consequences or bias.
